What do we have in common with Bo Horvat? We all love fresh fruits, grown in our very own British Columbia!
Background
Over 430 families local to the Okanagan Valley comprise the BC Tree Fruits Cooperative. Each grower works to nurture their orchards to grow the best possible fruits, which are then sold for all of us to enjoy.
BC Tree Fruits Cooperative was interested in supporting minor league hockey and promoting healthy eating. In January, they ran a contest inviting minor hockey teams in the Vancouver area to send in photographs of themselves enjoying apples. The winning team would receive a practice with – you guessed it – well-known professional hockey player, Bo Horvat! Digital Cyclops was asked to capture the once-in-a-lifetime experience. The complication: Could we film on skates?
Challenges
You might think that filming on ice could easily be done by walking onto the rink with shoes. Just imagine, though, trying to get to your car on a winter day, walking along a sidewalk that has thawed and then frozen over. Not only would there be slipping, there could be no hope of keeping up with the nimble, trained skaters. Luckily, our lead videographer, Kevin, played hockey as a child. He freshened up his skills and tested out his camera work ahead of time. Such smooth footage! An electronic gimbal wasn’t even needed.
The Result
On February 21, Coquitlam Minor Hockey Association’s Peewee C1 team met Bo Horvat on their home rink. He played and practiced with them, signed autographs, and gave advice. With Kevin capturing footage on the ice and Pollux filming wide from the bench area, we pulled together the highlights of the visit.
