Be Truck Aware!

Be Truck Aware!

Background

“Each year in British Columbia, approximately 60 people are killed in traffic crashes involving large commercial vehicles. Studies show that, in collisions between cars and large trucks, the occupants of the passenger vehicle are at least four times more likely to be killed than the driver of the truck. Studies also show that in fatal car-truck crashes, the driver of the passenger vehicle is at fault in at least two-thirds of the incidents.” (https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/transportation/driving-and-cycling/road-safety-rules-and-consequences/be-truck-aware)

In an effort to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities on B.C. roadways, several organizations have come together to launch the Be Truck Aware campaign.  Statistics, studies, and tips are great, but most people tend to think that they are good drivers.  What does it look like when drivers don’t leave enough room, merge too soon, drive in an unwise space, or forget that trucks need more room to manoeuvre?

What We Did

Road Safety B.C. already had dash cam footage of mistakes drivers commonly make around trucks.  The Be Truck Aware Alliance just needed someone to make the raw material into a finished video.  One of our long-time clients, ICBC, referred us to the project.  Trace of Trace Acres Communications reached out on behalf of the Alliance, and we agreed to take on the video.

Using existing graphics, we added simple animations to create title screens that highlight the driver tips.  Voice over adds details such as just how soon one can safely merge.  Text overlays help a viewer absorb the verbal messages.

The Result

In the end, we had a video that communicated key advice that could be easily remembered by drivers on the road.  Our work was integrated with research, writing, photographs, and print resources to reach the public through websites and social media.
