There’s an ongoing battle between Non Linear Editors for video.  The three main giants are, Premiere, Final Cut (X and Pro) and Avid.  At Digital Cyclops Video Productions we use the first two NLEs.  Add to that compositing and special effects work, there are quite a few out there from After Effects to Nuke.  In all practicality, NLEs really all do the same thing.  They allow you to arrange video clips, special effects elements, and layer audio like voice and music.  How they do it has largely been unchanged since people have been physically splicing bits of celluloid film together.  Now these can range from hundreds of dollars worth of investment, to thousands of dollars depending upon what NLE or compositor you decide upon.  We’ve heard of Hitfilm for quite some time, and while it’s a relative newcomer, they’ve been aggressively going after the indie film market.  iMovie and it’s ilk generally play in this space, and here’s where the cool thing is.  For the next couple of weeks, hitfilm is offering their normally $200 editor (which is a pretty decent price) for absolutely free!  It’s available for Mac or PC, so you don’t have to take out a loan for that new MacPro.
